Organization Name:
CREAMS-CREating dreAMS

Focused Topic:
Our focused topic is the foreign language education in the rural areas of Shanghai, China.

Purpose:

We are doing this because while the whole world is becoming more globalized, there are still many people in poverty who lack the chance to become global minded. Unlike us, they are not exposed to an international environment that allows them to interact with a broader variety of systems. We want the world to have more economic support for growth, and in order to achieve this we all have to be capable of understanding each other first. Language is a tool for people to interact with other individuals and for them to fully understand other cultures and nations. We want to help these people, those who are not given the equal chance as we are, and give them the chance to help equalize the inequities between us.

Message:
People should be informed of this issue because of the importance of globalization and the interdependence that has been developing between countries and nations.Without the lower classes of the society being educated enough to understand other nations and systems, the whole society cannot improve and globalization will falter.
Our message is that people should always be given the chance to choose what they truly want and they can only make these choices if they are capable to. Learning foreign languages will expose them to a new area of knowledge that will help them make better choices in the future and grant them the capability that they desperately need. Learning a foreign language like English will provide them with opportunities, such as jobs, so that they might have a better future and break out of the cycle of poverty. Without help to improve the quality of education, these children will live the same hard lives as their parents, as will their offspring and future generations. We want everybody to help those who have more than the children in the rural areas of Shanghai, who does not receive a proper education, let alone a foreign language education.

Goal:
Our goal in this project is to help children in rural areas to become more globalized and be given the chance to learn other languages, especially English.
This would allow these children to have access to more information, become more knowledgeable and hopefully help the development of the world in the future. During this project we want to hold fundraising activities. Through these activities, we want to raise enough money to buy students in rural schools English textbooks, reading books, games, dictionaries, etc. that would allow them to have more access to the language. We also want to visit the schools and communicate with students so that they would have an experience communicating with English speakers, motivating them to use this language and improving their oral skills. We would also hope to hold this event once every year, with students from SAS visiting different rural schools and communicating with the students. We believe that in the long term, we will able to improve the foreign language education the students in these schools receive.

Short-term Plan:

Our short term plan is to contact rural schools and fundraise for the tools that would allow them to have a better English education, such as English books/novels, games, dictionaries, etc.. We also hope to visit the school and really try to understand the condition they're in. However, this may be difficult due to the limited time and resources we have. We are also going to increase public awareness upon this issue by holding fundraising activities on the streets and informing the passersby of this issue. Even though they may very likely ignore and forget of what we tell them, we believe it will still increase the overall public knowledge of this issue.

Long-term Plan:
Our long term plan is to talk to our teacher or principle about the visit we are holding to the school and then establish a connection that will allow SAS to visit different schools yearly as a field trip. This would allow the rural schools to maintain a higher quality of foreign language education while being able to have SAS students understanding the school conditions of these rural schools and learning that the beautiful school we have is a privilege that few people have.

Resources:
In order to achieve our goal, we need lots of time to raise enough money and build up the program, such as purchasing the books, games, etc.

Division of Responsibility:
Cindy and Peggy will be responsible for the communication with local schools. Reina and Winnie will develop the fundraising plan. The fundraising and purchasing will be done by both teams.
